Controlling Your Attacks – Panic Disorder

Panic attacks can have a significant impact in your life and can even interfere with your work and social relationships. They can range from mild to debilitating, preventing you from going out and doing the things you normally did. They can also place a dent in your self-esteem. It is important that you know how to control panic attacks. If you want to conquer your panic attacks, here are some tips on how to control panic attacks:

Find the trigger. All panic attacks have a trigger. Find out what yours is. Panic attacks usually occur during times of stress or times when you feel helpless or confined. Closed spaces and small quarters, for example, can trigger a panic attack. So will the thought of facing a group of people whether for a meeting, presentation or public speech.

Learn to find the pattern of occurrence of your attacks and you’ll be better at predicting them. If you know what causes your panic attacks, you can better prepare for them before they occur and be able to control panic attacks and your negative feelings.

Learn relaxation techniques. Relaxation techniques help train the mind to control itself in situations where panic attacks usually occur. By learning to relax, you teach your body to follow your mind and control panic attacks.

Learn meditation or self-hypnosis, which are both effective for helping you clear your mind and reduce muscle tension and heart rate. They also work well with helping you gain better control of your breathing and your reactions in case of another panic attack. Practice these techniques for at least 20 minutes everyday to control panic attacks.

Learn to breathe properly. Breathing is the key to learning how to control panic attacks. Learn the proper technique by lying on a flat surface or sitting on a chair. By keeping your spine straight and closing your eyes, picture your diaphragm as your center.

Place a hand over the area and draw in a breath slowly, using a count of 5 and then breathe out slowly. Repeat this for at least 20 times until you find your rhythm and your body begins to relax. During this exercise, think of being in a peaceful and safe place and repeat to yourself reassuring statements such as, “I am in a safe place. Nothing will harm me. There is no danger to my person. I am safe.”

Next time a panic attack threatens you, use this breathing technique to calm yourself. Regardless of where you are, remember this technique and use it to control panic attacks.

Check your diet. Diet plays a big part in making you more susceptible to panic and anxiety attacks. Certain foods like caffeine, salt and nicotine for example, should be taken in moderation. Caffeine and nicotine are known stimulants and can increase your nervousness and agitation while salt hinders the normal functioning of the nervous system.

Lucid Dreaming – Is There A Shortcut?

Lucid dreaming is also often referred to as conscious dreaming, in that one can often exercise a certain degree of control over the dream, unlike with regular dreaming. Basically, lucid dreaming is all about the art of dreaming while at the same time being aware of the fact that it’s a dream, even while you’re a busy dreaming.

The undeniable fact is; that feeling of power which one experiences when one can control the direction of a dream, is something directly out of metaphysical existence. To a great extent, many of the limitations with which you’ve learned to live, simply vanish.

But, is it really easy as it looks? Can everyone experience lucid dreaming and bring to life that which would otherwise seems difficult or impossible in reality?

The truth is; lucid dreaming is by no means a difficult task. In fact, if you are serious about learning, then there are various ways you can try which have been tried and tested.

The first thing you need to do is to become absolutely certain as to why you want to master the art of lucid dreaming. Do you just want to have your own private playground in the form of lucid dreams, or is there some other specific reason for developing this skill? Your primary concern here is, you need to understand your reason clearly.

Once you have this level of clarity in your mind, the learning can start. Firstly, you need to learn a process; called “Dream Recall”, i.e., recalling a dream you had the previous night. Unless you remember a dream, you can’t achieve the stage of lucid dreaming.

Admittedly, this process can be incredibly slow although it should be noted that you can achieve this goal by means of a “dream recall register”, which in essence will allow you to write down and many details as you can remember regarding each dream you have. While progress may be slow in the beginning, with time you’ll soon come to discover that you are now able to remember even the finest details of a dream.

Hypnosis is also something which many people have found to have the ability of reducing the amount of time it takes to prepare ones subconscious in preparedness for lucid dreaming. In fact, in many instances, one or two sessions of hypnosis will be adequate for allowing you to remember your dreams consistently. When you reach that point, you know your mind has been suitably conditioned.

It’s not uncommon for a person to suddenly wake up while in the middle of a lucid dream. However, because of all the effort you already put into conditioning your mind, if this happens to you, you’ll have no problem reconnecting all the important details and once you’re done so, you simply need to relax in order to go to sleep again. You will then be able to continue with your dream, while guiding it in any direction you choose. You can be rest assured that once you wake up, you will realize the full power of conscious dreaming.

Another method which comes highly recommended, is that you go back to sleep again after you wake up. You can do this simply by setting your alarm to go off an hour or two before you’re scheduled to get up. When the alarm goes off, turn it off and go back to sleep. These dreams are the closest to lucid dreams and you can be rest assured, you’ll start wondering if they were even dreams to start off with.

As far as this is concerned, you may find it extremely beneficial to keep track of your sleeping patterns in order to determine the best time for you to have a lucid dream.

In addition to any other reasons you may have, lucid dreaming is also known to benefit those suffering from sleeping disorders such as insomnia. If you have difficulty going to sleep at regular hours, you simply need to convince your mind that together with sleeping, comes an opportunity for lucid dreaming. In most cases this will be enough persuasion for your mind to take over the responsibility of clearing away any thoughts which may be preventing you from sleeping.

Thanks to recent advances in sound technologies, it no longer requires an excessive amount of time in order to master the art of lucid dreaming. In fact, these breakthroughs have made it considerably easier for people to learn the skill.

Many people who are just starting out find that the quickest way for them to have a lucid dream, is by taking advantage of binaural beats.

Not only do these beets help to align brain waves to the correct frequency required for lucid dreaming, but as they are played in different frequencies in each ear, they have a wonderful relaxing affect.

Unfortunately, before this technology recently became available, the only sure way to enable you to experience a lucid dream, was by means of meditation techniques. Of course, because such techniques can often take years to master, many people were put off from learning this skill.

When one listens to the sound waves of binaural beats, especially when combined with hypnosis, it is possible to experience lucid dreaming in a relatively short space of time.

Acupuncture Services

Like a lightning rod attracts and directs the immense power of lightning, so an acupuncture needle attracts and re-directs the energy currents of the body. An acupuncture treatment can zone in on one specific area of complaint, but often you are asked about your entire medical history so your whole body can be worked. Acupuncture is called a holistic form of treatment, since your entire body, emotions and stress levels are also seen as having powerful effects on your health. Treating acne with acupuncture is not as far-fetched as it might first sound.

Acupuncture is very important for treating insomnia, depression, and anxiety. Insomnia is a disease that prevents people from getting proper amount of sleep throughout the day and night. Acupuncture involves inserting needles on various points of the body and reducing energy blocked in the veins. This helps in sending a series of complex signals to the brain, which promotes relaxation and sleep.

You should not be surprised if your acupuncturist uses different techniques in treating you in every single session. An acupuncturist’s techniques may vary because if one particular area is stimulated too often, that area may become desensitized and the treatment won’t be effective anymore. You can also note that an acupuncturist will use different variations in inserting the needle at different stages of the treatment. For example, the acupuncturist may insert the needle in one area for a few seconds then insert the next needle in another area for several minutes. But ultimately, acupuncture will only be effective in that it becomes successful in balancing the flow of energy in your body.

There are relatively few complications using acupuncture but there are certain risks involved if acupuncture is not used by trained and qualified acupuncture practitioners. Improper use of needles could result in certain organs being pierced, fainting, convulsions, nerve damage and also the onset of infections and also allergic reaction. If the needle is not placed properly, it can cause soreness and pain. If the needles are defective, blunt or if the patient moves, this could also lead to pain. If you have acupuncture when you are pregnant, there is possibility of harming the fetus as stimulation of the production of the hormone adrenocorticotropic and oxytocin which affects labor may take place

Acupuncture is widely used today. It often prevents the use of cortisone, painkillers and surgery. Studies have shown that about 61% of patients who were treated with acupuncture after being paralyzed as a result of a stroke showed great improvement.

Acupuncture is a method of curing illnesses through the insertion of needles in targeted points in the body for improved stimulation. The needles used for acupuncture are very thin. They are only a little thicker than a human hair. The main purpose of acupuncture is actually to normalize the flow of blood and balance the yin and yang in the body but, because it is very effective in curing certain diseases, it is now used as an alternative healing method.

Acupuncture. Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points along the body either by needle, laser, or by pressure. The stimulation of these points causes a chemical cascade in the body that creates an optimal environment for the body to heal itself. There are no side effects as no outside chemicals are introduced. Acupuncture needles are ‘hair thin’ and are not painful like regular needles.

In acupuncture, the nerves in the skin and muscles are stimulated by the penetration of thin, metallic, solid needles at anatomic points also known as acupuncture points or acupoints and this produces a wide variety of effects. It causes the system to increase the release of natural painkillers. These natural painkillers, endorphin and serotonin, are released in the pain pathway of the brain and the spinal cord causing the pain signals which are received to be modifie.

Anxiety Attacks – How Big A Role Does Stress Play?

Stress is an integral part of our lives. It heightens our awareness, sharpens our focus, and enables us to stay alert and focused. Stress helps motivate us into action and helps to maintain a healthy balance of hormones and chemicals in the brain. However, abnormally high amounts of stress can result in anxiety attacks.

The anxiety attacks can come on unnoticed and they can seem like everyday stress-related problems. If these attacks continue to go untreated, they can become out of control in an unsuspecting person.

If you recognize the symptoms of stress that can then lead to anxiety attacks you can then cure your anxiety attacks. Symptoms of stress include poor concentration and mentally drifting off, feeling more confused than you might otherwise and having bouts of irrational fear.

You’ll see some of those symptoms in anxiety attacks as well, but you’ll notice more of the physical symptoms when an attack is occurring. Some people experience shortness of breath, pounding heart rhythm, trembling or shakiness within the body, stomachaches and hot or cold flushes.

When the attack has reached its high point, you’ll notice a feeling of being out of control or losing a grip on yourself. Unfortunately, those experiencing anxiety attacks don’t always recognize their symptoms as an attack.

It is often easier for others to realize that something is wrong. The first step to curing your anxiety attacks is to seek out medical attention from a specialist who can decide if they are anxiety attacks and not a different medical-related illness.

When the doctor rules out medical possibilities and decides that they are anxiety attacks or panic attacks, he could suggest medication, cognitive behavioral therapy or even hypnosis.

A therapist will evaluate a sufferer’s past and decide what could be causing the stress and anxiety attacks. When the sufferer understands the reasons for their attacks, sessions can be arranged and action taken such as C.B.T. based on the history of the sufferer. Therapists can help the patient work through their issues and lessen the stress causing the anxiety attacks.

When everyday stress escalates, there are many ways to settle the overwhelming feelings of edginess. Getting the proper help will help calm the anxious emotions raging within you. Finding out what stressors cause those emotions and learning how to combat them can bring a sense of relief and feelings of comfort to know that there is hope.

Impotence And Erectile Dysfunction Can Be Beaten

Impotence and Erectile dysfunction (ED) cover the full gamut of male sexual performance issues from poor sexual desire to difficulties with ejaculating either prematurely or not at all. Erectile dysfunction tends to be limited to problems with getting or maintaining an erection.

At some point in their lives most men come across these problems. Generally speaking the problems have to occur for longer than 2 months to be classed as needing treatment from your doctor. The incidence of impotence increases as you get older but around 15% – 20% of men may be affected. .

Some Impotence Causes

It used to be claimed that the main cause was psychological. This was and is rubbish. There are many more physical causes than psychological. They include diabetes, kidney disease, alcoholism, vascular disease, atherosclerosis (‘furring’ of the arteries which narrows them and slows down blood flow) and heart disease. Nerve damage after surgery, stroke, trauma and accidents also cause ED.

Drugs including blood pressure lowering such as beta-blockers, anti depressants, anti histamines, some tranquillisers and anti stomach ulcer drugs also cause ED.

Lifestyle problems causing erectile difficulties include smoking, obesity, alcohol and being unfit.

Psychological problems such as stress at work, anxiety, guilt, tiredness, exhaustion and depression can all cause impotence.

Treatment of impotence

Drug treatments

Oral medication is now the treatment of choice for many men. The three most popular medications are Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. They are all the same type of drug with slightly different speed of action. You get an erection between 15 and 60 mins after taking them as they encourage blood to flow into your penis.

There are other drugs that were around before the big three and they include papaverine hydrochloride, phentolamine, and alprostadil (known as Caverject). On the whole they are not very popular and have been eclipsed by Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

Using a prescription medication called Muse is an alternative favoured by some. You push a small pellet down your penis and it is absorbed and gives you an erection.

Other Treatment Options

The old standby of a vacuum pump is still very effective, combined with a rubber band around the bottom of the penis to maintain your erection.

Alternatively, if you think your prescription drugs are the problem, your doctor may change then around to see if that can improve the situation.

Lifestyle changes include losing weight, drinking less and stopping smoking. Getting fit can help as well so you feel so much more lively and hopefully also notice your impotence problem decreasing.

Psoriasis and Arthritis

Psoriasis is a relatively common disease of the skin and its treatment is not completely effective or particularly pleasant for patients. Even though an arthritic condition is known to be linked to psoriasis the diagnosis of arthritic disease may still be missed when a patient attends with joint signs and symptoms. Psoriatic arthritis can have multiple effects on the joints and can lead to permanent joint damage which can cause disability and effects on quality of life. The prevalence of this skin condition in the UK stands at around two percent, with about 14 percent of these suffering from some degree of joint signs.

Even before the skin condition becomes obvious there can be signs of joint involvement in around fifteen percent of sufferers and even without joint involvement soft tissues can show changes which are typical in the arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers typically have a greater number of joints affected than in psoriatic arthritis, with perhaps a similar pattern presentation and in some examples only one or two joints are involved. The most involved anatomical areas are the entheses, which are the connections between the bones and the ligaments and tendons. The Achilles tendon is the largest enthesis in the body and commonly affected by inflammatory changes and pain.

With so many entheses in the body this might explain why some patients complain of widespread pain symptoms not be closely related to their joints. Individual joints of the fingers can swell, either on their own or with involvement of other joints, and this is a negative sign for the disease. Inflammatory back pain present with the typical features which also occur in ankylosing spondylitis. Usual symptoms are early morning stiffness, steady and gradual onset, worse pain at night, pain better with exercise and worse with resting. Back involvement may be present but not give symptoms in up to a third of patients. Inflammation of the end joints of the fingers and nail involvement may also occur.

Since joint symptoms are common in the population as we age so it can be difficult to diagnose the signs in psoriatic arthritis. However, any psoriasis sufferer who presents with a musculoskeletal condition should raise the possibility of arthritis, especially if they have inflammatory back pain or involvement of the terminal finger joints. Blood tests for arthritic involvement include the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and the C-reactive protein (CRP), both of which are raised in the presence of inflammation. If the usual features of the joint disease are present but psoriasis is not obvious then a careful search for the skin lesions should be instituted to exclude this type of condition which is strongly genetic.

Typically 30% of people diagnosed with this condition will suffer with non-progressive disease in a few affected joints. This presentation is usually effectively treated with steroid injections into the joints as required and by symptomatic management. Identifying this group initially is important to exclude those with worse disease who are likely to show increased inflammatory blood markers, to be male, to have a larger number of affected joints and to have used steroids previously. If showing these negative factors they are more likely to develop damaging disease to the joints with increased disability and a reduction in their quality of life.

Around five percent of sufferers develop a very destructive and quickly advancing form of the arthritis. Metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease are more prevalent and can shorten life so the risk factors such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol are important to control. Presentation of any joint features in the presence of psoriasis is an indication for referral to a rheumatologist, although in some cases the symptom presentation might be widespread pain or repeated local problems such as tennis elbow. Early referral can prevent the onset of joint destructive problems and should be encouraged.

Research and development in rheumatoid arthritis has historically been well ahead of that for psoriatic arthritis but this picture is changing quickly with large numbers of published papers over the last ten years. The instigation of the biological treatment drugs has also encouraged new diagnostic and treatment options. We have however not achieved clear treatment protocols or good evidence for some treatments.
